Queen of the Mountain

Queen of the Mountain

Weather warmed up this afternoon just in time to take some photos with the new lens. I’m hoping for some interesting interior shots with this lens, but I tried exterior shots first. Loaded the results on facebook.

Three greyhounds peeking over fence

Greyhounds were good sports today, but everybody would like some of this snow to go away. Bring on the mud photos!

Neighborhood watch

fence_studio

The yard is enclosed by a 6.5 foot fence – I would say it’s about that tall. Usually. If one was measuring from the ground to the highest point of the fence.

Now it’s a little shorter in places. Places where the snow has drifted in behind it. Does Winchester care? Not much. Does Sage care? A little. Does Annie? You bet!

fence_annie2

She’s worked the snowbank into a rock hard perch where she can survey the neighborhood.

fence_annie3

“Humm… what are the neighbors doing over there? I see the chiropractor is out with his snow blower again. So nice of him to blow out the driveway.”

fence_annie4

She’s become a regular neighborhood watch. Finally a Greyhound Watch Dog.

Sage occasionally joins her. He doesn’t stay long.

Just long enough for me to get a shot of his tongue… Sigh.

I sure hope it starts to melt soon.

Good day.

South Dakota

One of the advantages of living in the middle nowhere is there are few distractions. No galleries to visit and no hip coffee shops to sip cappuccino with way cool friends. What there is here is lots of weather. Snow. Ice. Cold. That all works okay when the studio is stocked with clay and my head is stocked with ideas.

Wet boxes

Today was a good day on the box production front. I’m edging in on my goal. Another day or two of box construction, then two -three days to make figures…..

The boxes look good and, knock on wood, nothings cracking or warping.

Greyhound playing in snow

Puppies played most of the day. Good day.

Motivation.

Trying hard to find a little motivation today. The sky is gray and it is snowing. Yes, it was 72 degrees on Wednesday. Today it is a mere 27 degrees. Ahh, North Dakota!

I think I’m suffering from Vitamin D deficiency.

I’m resisting the urge play on the computer all day — tired of the ongoing problems with Internet Explorer and the “theme” I use for this website/blog. Something somewhere makes IE unhappy resulting in this site/blog loading halfway. I rarely use IE anymore. Firefox all the way. Site/blog works fine in Firefox, but has to do the same in IE. Would it be easier to diagnose the problem or should I find another theme layout?

I’m going to make a stout cup of coffee and head out to the studio.

Today I want to move to Kanab, Utah. Anybody have any reasons why I shouldn’t?

Gray hound.

Brindle dog in Spring.
The thing about winter is that the world turns white. When the sun doesn’t shine, the world is gray.

Winter day in spring.
I stumbled upon a blog today — rich with photos of a recent trip to Texas — “I remember COLOR!,” I thought as I looked at the photos.

Winter day in spring.
I’m going to go out and buy a bright bunch of spring flowers for my dining room table…

Here it is! Okay… let’s unwrap it. But this is what they look like for a good portion of their lives when I have them. Wrapped up to keep their moisture so they remain workable.

This is very much in the works. Yesterday I finished working out the basic Greyhound form and started making rabbits. Today I hollowed out the Greyhound.

intheworks_bigbrain_0236
Tomorrow I hope to work the detail and make more rabbits — lots of rabbits.

intheworks_bigbrain_0243
Lots and lots of rabbits. Because rabbits are a sign of spring….

Backyard
It is spring, right?

It’s here. Again.

Lots of studio time recently. I took the opportunity to get to work.

In the works : sculpture

Here’s the piece I’m working on. Not quite “done” yet — but it is hollowed and drying.

Here’s a close up of one of the bunnies.

Deck railing

And, yes, it is snowing… again. Some say 12-13 inches so far (it is still snowing). I will resist commenting on this too much as I will be sure to use language not acceptable in public situations.

Answering some questions.

Couple of questions that have been floating around in the email, etc.

blizzard_jason_8836

The blizzard wasn’t so bad – compared with the flooding that is going on in the rest of North Dakota I’ll take blizzard.

Storms like this one are not the usual weather for us, though they do happen. No power outages so, other than the snow and being cooped up in the house some more it wasn’t so bad.

We usually get about 13.5 inches of precipitation for the entire year. The photos show about 13-15 inches of snow. Most people are saying that a storm like this, with this much snow, hasn’t happened in ten years or more.

It took about a day and a half to get out of the driveway and for the roads to be plowed open so one could get anywhere.

The weather report has been saying MORE snow for this weekend…Today we had snow again.

We are nowhere near the flooded areas of the state though there is localized flooding here and there with reports of wet basements.

The two dots on the right hand side of the map are Fargo (lower dot) and Grand Forks (upper dot). Bowman is near the highest point in the state, while Fargo and Grand Forks are in the Red River valley.

Blizzard March 2009

Blizzard feet

More photos of hounds playing in the snow on Flickr.

Good Morning!

Blizzard : March 24 2009

They predicted a blizzard. Boy did we get it. And still getting it.

My morning started with shoveling a bit of snow so the dogs could get into the yard.

Blizzard : March 24 2009

Of course the yard has some spectacular drifts. The fence is about 6 feet tall.

Blizzard : March 24 2009

And consider that the day before yesterday… it was 73 degrees F outside.

Blizzard : March 24 2009

Annie gets a look on her face when the snow appears… something like, “I wish I was still in California!”

Soggy.

Sage

Weather.com says it is 44 degrees outside. 44 and sunny. I know those in southern climates think I’m nuts, but it feels like spring.

Run Spoo!

I hauled all the dog beds out of the house and onto the deck. The hounds spent most of the morning sleeping on the beds in the sun. In the afternoon we headed to the dog park. The Spoo (Standard Poodle) came too.

Spoo puts on the brakes

The Spoo would like to run like the Greyhounds. He really gives it a good try. He is not, however, a Greyhound.

My powerhouse

This is a Greyhound!

Two Greyhounds running in the snow

See that thing hanging out of Annie’s mouth? That’s her tongue. 44 degrees makes winter hardy Greyhounds’ tongues hang out.

The Showdown.

Winchester and the Spoo stalked each other.

Practicing her take

Annie practiced her take from full speed.

Practicing her take

And they all played. And ran. And had a great time. I love my dogs.
