Smokin’ new ride

New bicycle I have a new bicycle. For the dogs. So they can trot next to it. Varying up the exercise a bit.

The greyhounds are loving it! I’ve been working up the distance – watching those Greyhound feet for signs of wear – riding that line between providing a workout, but not over doing it. Let the hound set the pace. Sage, especially, is loving this new activity.

Yes I wear a helmet, Mom.

New bicycle

It isn’t so clear in this photo – I have a Springer attached to this bike. It allows me to keep both hands on the handle bars while still obeying the leash law. All three greyhounds picked up on what to do right away. I want them to sustain a trot and after a bit of encouragement they figured this out quickly.

And how about this bike? It’s smokin! Feel like I should be wearing a poodle skirt and horned rimmed glasses as I ride. But it’s got the two things that I wanted in a bike for this endeavor: foot brakes and short enough frame that I can put my feet down and touch nearly flatfooted. Oh, and the Springer thing had to fit on it.

Haven’t owned a Huffy since 1982. Cool.

High Grass.

Greyhound rolling in the grassHow is your summer, Sage? Are you enjoying rolling in the grass?

Greyhound dog rolling in the grassEven when it makes you sneeze? Doesn”t it smell good? Makes a dog want to roll, doesn”t it?

Greyhound dog rolling in the grassRub that spot on your back….

Greyhound dog rolling in the grassAhhh, much better.

As the fireworks rage

The Greyhounds could care less.

Black Greyhound sleeps as fireworks boomUnlike many, many dogs who hate, hate, hate fireworks. These guys don”t care at all.

Brindle greyhound sleeping on rugWell, that”s not exactly correct. They were pretty interested in what the neighbor dogs were making all the fuss about – bark, bark, bark. But that wore off quickly.

Old Apollo like many dogs – tortured by the booms of the fireworks. Thank goodness these guys don”t care. So much easier and less stressful for everyone.

Chuck it part 2.

Greyhounds are creative dogs. If the Chuckit! doesn’t appeal as a tennis ball propulsion device, it may have other uses – like a back scratcher. Sage was game for this.

But Annie found new delight in this toy.

“Ahhhh…..”

Happy Thursday!

Difficult, waking up each morning…

“Come on, pups! Let’s meet this beautiful day! The sun is shining and the birds are singing!”

“Yawn!”

“Winchester? How about you? Let’s go out to the studio and check the kiln…”

But not Annie – she’s up and ready to go. From her- “Human. Stop messing around and treat me like the princess that I am. I need you to prepare my food, but not before rubbing my neck and  shoulders. Stop playing with these ridiculous contraptions and give me the attention I deserve.”

“Yes, Annie…”

:)

Tail.

My sweet Annie has damaged her tail. Nope it’s not the dreaded broken-open, blood-spatter-everywhere kind of damage (thank goodness!) instead the last two vertebrae are swollen. And she’s carrying it all funky – sort of straight out at the end.

Drives me crazy is that I have no idea what she did.

Annie, however, doesn’t seem to mind it at all. It hurt at first and she carried it again her leg. Now she’s back to her normal happy self, tho the end is still is painful and swollen. She does carry it up on the end occasionally. Wonder if she bruised the bones or if it’s actually broken or nerve damage or what. Never had an injury like this in all the years of Greyhounds. Huh.

Too much and a dream.

There are times when I feel like the leash in this photo – stretched. Sometimes stress is a good thing, right?

Remember 2+ weeks ago when I wrote about the panic to get ready for the Greyhound Gathering in Kanab. I’ve made exactly 8 small foot sculptures since then and a bunch of tiles and welcome signs. It’s a start. Today I’m hoping to tackle a few wall pieces.

The resource that I lack the most is time. So I turned down a chance to be on a statewide Arts board. I’m only going to one day of the upcoming state library workshops. I’m not going to take on any more website projects, no more extras for a while. Must par down a bit so I can meet a few deadlines and achieve some long held goals.

I wish I could take 6 months off – spend the entire time working on my studio work. Until then, today….

Etsy and my embarrassing dog.

Memory Boxes and Greyhound Collection

Adding new work to my etsy store. Boxes, feet sculptures, tiles, etc. And the sterling silver pendant is there too.

And now for a silly dog story. Annie is a funny dog. She’s clever. She’s not afraid of anything… well, small dogs, she’s not crazy about, but she’s never met a stranger she didn’t like.

She also likes to stick her nose into tight places. See photo above. She presses her nose right on in there.

So… yesterday… Annie meets a nice lady — nice lady that bends down to say hello to Annie.

Trouble is… nice lady was amply bosomed and wearing a low cut shirt. So, like I wrote above, Annie isn’t shy. She saw that ample bosom and must have thought, “What’s in there?”

Down her cold nose went as far as she could get her little snake head down.

The nice lady squealed. Then she laughed.

Silly dog.

Sunlight.

Annie_sunlight_feb2010

The Greyhounds have been weathering the weather quite well. Better than I am it seems. They, literally, find the bright spots.

Not there yet, but I am working on it. These are the components of my angst:

  • Boxes. I am itching to fire them, but clay dries when it wants. I could turn on the fan and up the heat in the studio – not the best practice, however. Best let them take their time. Sigh.
  • Big “Frank” sculpture. He feels dry, except for his rear end. So not dry yet either….
  • Same for Gettysburg Dog, Same for Three Dog Night sculpture. This is North Dakota. It is DRY here… right?
  • Big Runner dog is not going to fit in my kiln. I need to stop making pieces that will not fit in my kiln OR buy a bigger kiln.
  • My etsy store is empty. This is a good thing (Everything is SOLD!) but, hello!, need to restock.
  • The new Sterling Silver pendant is *this* close to done. The plan is to have it ready for the American Whippet Club 2010 National Specialty in Tucson in April. Better get going.
  • Tiles. Have we mentioned tiles at all? Must make more tiles! (Slab roller to make said tiles are buried under drying boxes).

All of the above mean that everything is going well, that I need more exercise, that I should switch back to organic coffee (or cut out coffee entirely). The boxes and sculptures will dry. I will fire them. I will figure out what type of finish will work best for the sculptures. I will make that series of large tiles I keep thinking about. The snow will melt and the Greyhounds (and I) will be in better physical condition. I will buy a larger kiln and have it installed. The new sterling pendant will materialize. The etsy store will be stocked and restocked. And I will forget about all these things that are driving me CRAZY right now – replacing them with new “problems.”

It all means life is good.

Neighborhood watch, part 2.

blog_18February2010_01

When we last left this corner of the fence it had a gigantic snowbank behind it. Thanks to a week with some, but not enough, melting, the snowbank is still there. Turns out, Annie, Sage and Winchester aren’t the only dogs in the neighborhood with a snowbank.

blog_18February2010_02

Brody has a snowbank too. Right across the alley.

blog_18February2010_03

“Brody, man, you have a snowbank too?”

blog_18February2010_04

“Woof!”

blog_18February2010_05

“Guys, come over here and look at Brody’s snowbank”

blog_18February2010_06

“Woof, woooooooo!”

blog_18February2010_07

“That rocks. Do it again!”

“Those skinny hairless dogs are so easily amused…”

Queen of the Mountain

Queen of the Mountain

Weather warmed up this afternoon just in time to take some photos with the new lens. I’m hoping for some interesting interior shots with this lens, but I tried exterior shots first. Loaded the results on facebook.

Three greyhounds peeking over fence

Greyhounds were good sports today, but everybody would like some of this snow to go away. Bring on the mud photos!
