It started normally. Just like all the others.

But the face on this guy – the expression on his face – demanded more. A propeller beanie. What else could it be?

I love snarling Greyhounds. Especially this way – silent, flash some teeth way that is a not-so-subtle way to remind the pack that “We know exactly what’s going on here, don’t we? No reminder’s necessary, right, kiddo?”

I see lots of teeth around here and rarely does anyone get hurt.

Elegant Annie clay Greyhound sculpture copyright Sarah Regan Snavely

Elegant Annie, ©2010 Sarah Regan Snavely, 13.5x7.5x24", clay, African cherry board

While I use my own Greyhounds as reference material for nearly every Greyhound piece, I rarely create a faithful portrait. This one was different. While it is not my Annie totally, it is heavily inspired by her. That made this piece particularly difficult to sell.

Sold to a private collection in Pennsylvania.

Number 3, ©2010 Sarah Regan Snavely, 14x6x14", clay

During the 30′s, a couple travelled from track to track racing their Greyhounds and Monkey jockeys.

I love the idea of the Greyhounds having riders – though in my head they are more often rabbits, not monkeys. Still, I wanted to attempt a monkey – challenging. I love the way this piece turned out. Sold to a private collector in Connecticut USA during Dewey Beach 2010.

Sarah Regan Snavely : Soul Mask clay sculpture

Soul Mask, ©2010 Sarah Regan Snavely, 13.5x7x15", clay

I used antique newspaper type to impress the Emily Bronte quote, “Whatever our souls are made of, his & mine are the same” into the surface of the clay. The phrase was repeated over the entire face mask and the slip collar. This piece was sold during Dewey Beach 2010 to a private collector in Maryland.

Poor bunny. She is terribly uncomfortable – being used as a pillow by that big boney Greyhound.

The year was 2005. I loved this piece. Loved. Was so excited about the glaze surface of this piece. Isn’t this glaze luscious?

This piece was quite challenging. I made the figure in the front, then had to keep it wet while I worked on the figure in the back – if they differed at all they would not dry (and therefore, shrink) together. That would leave a nasty gap between the two figures. But they fit together perfectly.
