About Art Making

Why dogs?

I like dogs. I’ve always liked dogs. I like the physicality of dogs. I like the history of dogs. I like the myths about dogs. Mostly I think that dogs are nifty little alien-like creatures which have infiltrated our world. Masters of adaptation. Parasites living off their human hosts– I mean that in the best way… I really do. I have three of my own parasites and would have more if I had the time and space.

It is their language, their “personality” faults, the way people see and don’t see them, the shapes that make up the variety of body types, the science behind their crazy expressions of genetics— all of those things. Dogs just seem to be the best vehicle for me to convey my ideas that hopefully make up the content and purpose of my work.

What else are you passionate about?

Paper. Books. Freedom of information. Greyhound genealogy. Surrounding myself with beauty. Not necessarily in that order.

Have you always known what you wanted to do?

Pretty much. When I was a teenager I thought I wanted to be a small animal veterinarian, but there was math involved. Not so good on the math.

What is with the upside-down dog sculptures?

To me they are about happiness. The first one I made came after a period where I was up to my Wellingtons in sour creative energy that was seeping into my life and turning things rancid.

The ‘roaches are about finding the joy. Just happy creatures.

Why is the upside down pose called Cockroaching?

From the Greyhound-L email list. Nobody seems to remember who started calling this upside-down, flat-on-yer-back, legs-in-the-air contortion “Cockroaching”. I think it is derived from “dead cockroach” as in that’s how a deceased cockroach is commonly found.

When naming the sculpture series I dropped the dead since it seemed to conflict with the feeling of joy.

Why do you work in clay?

I do remember driving my 4th grade art teacher nuts pestering about the timeliness of the clay project– I still have the that project displayed on a book shelf not 5 feet away from my computer.

Working with clay is like playing the mud all day long. The clay body has a life all its own and I like that collaboration– there is only so much that it will allow me to control. I like how clay proves me wrong– sometimes things don’t go as I’d planned– glazes turn out differently than I’d expect, pieces crack, surprises happen– most of the time things work out just fine. There is a magic about working with clay than I can’t fully articulate quite yet. I’ll get there.

Where do your ideas come from?

From my hounds, from other people’s hounds, from the way that people react to their dogs, from the way that dogs react to people, from the way that people react to other people.

There is plenty of good thinking time to be had while walking the Greyhounds. Good doggies they are.
