Unloaded a glaze kiln today. Many times the broken pieces of sculptures and tiles become test pieces for glaze. Here are the results from yesterday’s firing.
There are two pieces in each of these photos – one for each clay body. In this case, the smaller foot is the sandy clay body that I’m currently using for sculptures. The large foot is from the white grog clay body. In most cases the sandy clay gives a slightly red/cream tone to the pieces.
See the unglazed parts of these pieces (the broken ends) — that’ll give a good idea of the colors of the clay body and how the glaze tone depends on these tones.
This one is a definite “no”. Too much gloss for a sculpture. Not my favorite.
Not crazy about this one either. Too orange.
This glaze is okay… I don’t love the speckled quality.
This white glaze also has the speckles. I don’t mind it here. I’d like to try this glaze again – maybe fewer coats. It fills into the details a bit too much.
Whoa. What do you think of this? Kinda funky. White crackle.
This is the green crackle. Like the gold undertone on the larger piece.
So… any favorites?

The crackled effect is kind of neat.
I like the crackle, makes for a weird surface… Probably a table-top size piece. BTW, thanks for the quiche recipe. yum.
I’m liking the green crackle more than the others.
I like the first two, and the white. Even the orangy one might work as an accent, or maybe for a brindle look.
