Smashed.

blog_MrHammersCousin

Long time blog readers might remember Mr. Hammer. I’m not sure what became of Mr. Hammer, but he’s been replaced. This is his cousin. She doesn’t have a name yet.

blog_stufftosmash

She’s just as effective as Mr. Hammer.

Goodbye, Pinkish sleeping greyhound with multiple cracks.

blog_smashed

Sniff. A box full of mistakes. Glaze tests, cracked boxes, broken tails.

Meanwhile in the kiln… another type of smashing.

This poor guy didn’t make it through the bisque firing. Trapped steam. Otherwise everything looks pretty good.

oh no! what happens to all those smashed pieces? can you make mosaics with them?

I’d like to suggest Beat-y Davis for your new hammer.

Ouch – I’d suggest “Madame” as the name…

The Hammer family seems quite bright and effecient. Hope they don’t visit too often! Maybe a new name for your studio: Art & Hammer?

Sorry to hear of your losses. Hope the big pieces turn out well.

    I agree with Karen…Madam Hammer is a good name….
    2 things……
1~~I saw some EXCELLENT glaze tests in that box of shame…..I want to know what a few of them ARE!!!!
2~~Do you have a problem with other pieces getting hurt when a big (or little) piece blows up in the kiln in bisque? Or do you put enough space between the big pieces….?

The glazes on the angel tile box are from some Tennessee company. Opulence line I think. I’ll look ‘em up. The striped piece is shino glazes from Coyote. Not thrilled with the shinos.

In this firing, nothing else was hurt. I’m not always so lucky. I knew I was pushing it with the last piece (the one that blew up) thought it might be dry enough to make it through. Guess not. Been using reclaimed, wedged but not pugged clay – so trapped steam I’m guessing.

Quickly getting a new appreciation for how much work goes into getting a piece all the way through.
