Hollowing Out.

Here we have one of the two figures for what I’m calling the “double dog neck piece.” That’s a working title.

I’ve taken her off the pipe armature. Now it’s time to hollow her out. Let’s start by cutting off her head.

The head is hollowed out – to roughly 3/8 inches thick. As I work hollowing, I’m compressing the clay being careful not to distort the shape. I put the hollowed head back on the neck often as I work. We want the pieces to fit!

After the head is hollowed it is reattached to the neck. Then we’re going to cut off the neck. Then hollow. Then reattach. And so on.

The small holes are from the pipe armature.

They are repaired as the piece is hollowed.

As I go I repeat the process. Cut. Hollow. Reattach. Repeat.

Until the entire piece is completed.

Now  time to clean the studio. The background of these photos…. ulp!

Good Luck with this piece. Think it has great potential. Don’t let the models knock it over!!!
